Assets and the VA Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit

Veterans Aid and Attendance Pension

Applying for the Aid and Attendance benefit from the Department of Veterans Affairs, (VA) can be a great way to help pay for home care for aging veterans. This particular pension was created after World War I as a way to help returning soldiers receive proper care at home after injuries and disabilities that were sustained during battle. Through the years, it expanded to provide coverage to veterans of all ages and is not limited to those with an injury or disability caused or worsened by military service.

To qualify, veterans need to have served at least 90 days of active duty service in one of the major branches of the United States military, and at least one of those days has to have fallen during a time of war as defined by Congress. This can include World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Gulf War veterans must have served active duty for a minimum of two years.

The veteran also needs to have a limited income and minimal assets. When it comes to assets, that doesn’t include a first home, but it can include other items such as: a second home, vacation home, rental property, jewelry, stocks and bonds, and much more.

If the veteran applies for the VA pension and Aid and Attendance benefit and his or her assets are too much to qualify, they will be denied.

It is recommended that when applying for the VA Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit, the family seeks help from a reputable resource, such as Veterans Home Care. Because Veterans Home Care handles the claims paperwork regularly, the family and the veteran will find that the process is smoother. Turn-around times on claims may also be a lot faster when the paperwork is organized and handled in exactly the way the VA likes to receive it.

Veterans Home Care also provides their unique VetAssist® Program and if you qualify, it provides an interest-free loan to pay for home care with no out-of-pocket costs before the VA approves your application. The VA can take months to approve a claim. That’s one of the reasons thousands of veterans and their spouses have used the VetAssist® Program to apply for the Aid and Attendance benefit.
